The other day a long lost laptop turned up at the back of an office cupboard. That was a good thing. But it would have been so much better if the computer had been able to let me know where it was, so I didn’t have to spend hours searching for it.
I want objects to talk to me! At least, I want them to have squeaky little voices that call out “I’m over here, under that pile of papers” or “You haven’t picked me up for 2 months, is that because you’ve forgotten where I am?”
Actually, it could be quite creepy having a house or office full of objects that talk, so I’ll settle for them sending me a text or email. Maybe they could tweet. Imagine that book you started months ago sending a gentle reminder “If you want to finish reading me, I’m in that backpack you stopped using last summer.”
It’s really just an extension of calling your mobile phone when you can’t remember where you’ve put it – but more pro-active. There’d be more no hiding things away for safe-keeping, then discovering they are so well-hidden even you don’t know where they are. (I’m assuming I’m not the only one who does this, of course.)
I’ve heard of companies thinking of putting RFID tags in clothes so you don’t accidentally put a red sock in the whites wash. That’s fine, but what about socks that can find their pair? That would be much more helpful. Let the poor, lonely sock that’s lost down the side of the bed have a voice. It needs to be reunited with its mate!
So technology folks, please get busy. This would be really useful application. Meanwhile, I’m off to look for my MP3 player, I know it’s here somewhere…
